Using 301 Redirects As Coupon Landing Pages

Using 301 Redirects As Coupon Landing Pages

In the simplest of “technical definitions”, a 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to the other.

For example, if your previous website was www.coolwebsite.com and you wanted to change it to www.coolestwebsite.com, you’d implement a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Now whoever typed in your old URL (or clicked on a link to your old URL), would automatically be forwarded to your new URL.

A 301 redirect can be likened to a “change of address form” you might get at a local post office. If someone doesn’t know you moved, you want to make sure all your mail is forwarded to your new place so you fill out the form and the post office will take care of it for your, this is sort of the same but for websites and most importantly it carries all your link juice and page rank. (see how too below)

Why would you want to use a redirect?

You don’t have to worry about certain sites not allowing a certain url shortening service.

Your links will look 100 X more professional

Properly cloak your affiliate links

Retain the link juice from your affiliate links

It’s true 301 redirects pass all page rank and SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages rankings) – making them a vital part of an SEO roadmap for any professional website. The passing of page rank from a 301 redirected page to another page will not be instantaneous.

Here’s some vitally important info – Did you know http://coolwebsite.com and http://www.coolwebsite.com are considered two different websites? It’s true! Even though in passing we may consider both versions the “same URL”, they’re actually different and could possibly even lead to different content.

Insiders Tip: It is a must to have a 301 redirect between the http:// and the http://www versions of your website. If you do not,  all the inbound links that point to http://www.coolwebsite.com won’t pass authority over to http://coolwebsite.com and vice versa.

Advanced 301 redirect technique

If you are going to be creating a lot of 301 redirects or find editing your .htaccess to be too complicated then you should just use a redirect script for your site like I do. Simple redirect script works on any website and installs in seconds it will make creating 301 redirects, cloaked affiliate links and short url’s with a few clicks.  Get it here:These can all be integrated with your coupons allowing you to keep all the link juice from your affiliate links and most importantly be unblockable on any coupon site.  This is how to post affiliate links safely but you can also do it manually as noted below :

What is a .htaccess file?

When a visitor/spider requests a web page your web server checks for a .htaccess file. If the .htaccess file contains specific instructions for certain requests, including security, redirection issues and how to handle certain errors it will properly direct the
request.

If you already have an .htaccess file on your website (may need to view hidden files) with lines of code in it, be very careful not to change any of the existing lines unless you are familiar with the functions of the file.

To perform the 301 redirect with .htaccess just scroll down past all the code, leave a blank line similar to below:

redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm

It’s as easy as that. Save the file, upload it back onto your website and try navigating to it. You should be instantly and seamlessly forwarded to the new URL.

Notes: Be sure not to add “http://www” to the first URL path  – just put the path from the top level of your site.
